The Knight of Wands tarot card

A rampant warrior on a wild horse, which symbolises his unbridled instincts and passion, is storming across the plains. The salamanders on his tunic and the ornaments on his armour describe his fiery and fearless nature. In the background we see Egyptian pyramids, probably an indication of his adventurous nature. His courage is not always good, because it is partly the product of his rashness and light-headedness. As a consequence, this warrior often overcommits himself to endeavours that are not worth the energy he invests. He is a keen believer in chivalry and will be the first to help the weak and the oppressed.

On the card

A knight in armour rides a rearing horse across a desert landscape. The horse lifts its front legs high in the air, full of energy and barely held back. The knight holds a wand in one hand, raised before him, and leans into the movement.

Over his armour he wears a yellow tunic decorated with black salamanders, the fire creatures that mark the Wands court. His helmet is crowned with a long red plume that streams back like a flame, and similar flame-like decorations trail from his arms. The horse, too, is lively and spirited, with an orange-red mane.

The background is a dry, sandy plain with pyramid-shaped hills in the distance under a clear sky. It is a landscape of heat and adventure, far from home and from settled life.

Everything about the image is movement and fire. The knight seems about to leap forward and charge off in pursuit of the next adventure. The card describes passion, daring, travel and sudden change, a figure full of courage and charm, but one who may act before he thinks and may not stay long enough to finish what he starts.

Upright

Dramatic changes in events, moving away from one's residence, travel, advancement into the unknown, enthusiastic, athletic.

Reversed

Impulsive, violent, restless, argumentative, jealous.
