The Queen of Wands tarot card

The feminine side of the Queen together with the fiery character of the Wands suit offers a very magnetic, happy and charming energy. The problem is that the clash of fire and water produces fog. Indeed, this energy is somewhat elusive and unclear in its nature. While she is warm, communicative and open, she can also be very shy and passive. We can see the sunflower in her hand, and we can assume it is turned towards the Sun, the same direction the Queen is looking in. It is possible that this person tends to look only at the positive, sunny side of situations. Perhaps she sometimes avoids examining situations thoroughly. The two lions on her throne further emphasise the importance of the fire element, the Sun and the astrological sign of Leo, and we can almost feel her radiance as we see her golden clothes. This kind of person will always pursue her goals with great enthusiasm, no matter what circumstances are at play and how strong the opposition is. We can also see that her throne has no top, a sign of endless possibilities. On the right side of the throne we can see a barren rock, indicating that this woman is tougher than she looks. On the left-hand side we see the possible outlines of Egyptian pyramids, a motif we already saw on the Knight of Wands, indicating a passion for adventure. Probably the most intriguing motif on the card is the somewhat disturbing black cat sitting right next to the throne. Traditionally it is not considered a very good omen; it shows a glimpse of the dark side of this card. The black cat is also a symbol of Venus, the planet that brings a sensual and carnal aspect to this card.

On the card

The Queen sits on a stone throne, facing us directly, with her legs apart in a strong, open posture. In her right hand she holds a tall flowering wand, and in her left a large sunflower. She wears a golden robe and a crown, and looks slightly to one side with a calm, self-assured expression.

Her throne is decorated with lions, and behind her rises a backdrop of sunflowers. The lion is the animal of Leo, the fire sign ruled by the Sun, and the sunflower turns its face to follow the Sun across the sky, so both images link the Queen to warmth, vitality and light.

At her feet, in the very front of the card, sits a black cat facing us. The cat is a creature of independence and intuition, often associated with the hidden and the mysterious, and it gives this bright, sunny card an unexpected touch of shadow.

Behind the throne the landscape is dry and open, with distant hills under a clear sky. The overall image is of confidence, warmth and charisma: a woman fully at home in her own power, generous and lively, but also self-reliant and not easily tamed.

Upright

Open, sensual, loving, magnetic personality, wise, happy and positive, sincere, passionate and enthusiastic, spontaneity, independent.
