There is great power in a single spark: it can cause devastation, or it can be tamed and used for good. When we see a spark we can't say what will become of it, but we know that great power resides inside it. The spark on this card is the first burst of creativity, an idea that could become something big or could just be forgotten the next day. We see that the wand has sprouted some leaves, suggesting that creative ideas are always the prerequisite for success. In the background we see a castle and a peaceful landscape; they are something of a promise if we follow our creative urges, but they are far enough away to remind us that they are only a promise and more work needs to be done. This is the living force: it energises the body, promotes good health, supports projects and brings enthusiasm, so be careful not to lose it and use it wisely.
On the card
A hand emerges from a grey cloud on the right side of the card, firmly gripping a thick wooden wand. The wand is alive: small green shoots and leaves sprout from it, and a few leaves have broken free and float down through the air, like sparks of growth falling onto the land below.
Beneath the wand stretches a calm, green landscape. A river winds through it, trees grow along its banks, and on a hill in the distance stands a castle. Further back there are mountains under a clear sky.
The hand from the cloud, a motif shared by all four Aces, suggests a gift offered from beyond ourselves, an opportunity or impulse that arrives rather than one we manufacture. What we do with it is up to us. The living, budding wood marks the Wands as the suit of fire in its creative sense: growth, energy, desire and the will to begin.
The distant castle shows where this energy could lead, a goal that can be built, while the open land between here and there reminds us that the journey has only just started.
