The XXI The World tarot card

At last we are at the end, or is it the end? The journey we began as The Fool now enters its last stage, but as we look more deeply, it is only the end of a cycle, and in a way just the beginning of another journey. This card bears the number 21. 21 is a threefold manifestation of the number 7, which signifies the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. In tarot, the end in our material sense of the word does not exist. Every end is the seed of something else; there is always one more level to comprehend, one more step to take, like a never-ending video game where there is always another task to accomplish. In other words, this card simply symbolizes our graduation from one level of our existence. Saturn rules this card, giving it the imprint of limits and control. Saturn is often deemed a malefic, the one that brings sadness and difficulties. It also signifies time, so this card also has a sense of completion, of graduation, as we have already said. This is a card of cosmic consciousness, of becoming one with the higher self on all levels, the natural conclusion of the process described in Judgement. Saturn in this case acts as a scholar, one who through the power of concentration and knowledge of his own limits attains completion and an understanding of his wholeness.

On the card

In the middle of the card we see a dancing female figure. Unlike some figures on the previous cards, The Devil for example, this figure is obviously feminine. Although in some decks this figure is considered both male and female, here we can see that the creators of the deck were aiming at something else. The wreath around the figure is the Yoni, the Divine Womb, the gateway through which manifestation enters the material realm. The wreath is also very similar to the number zero, symbolizing unmanifested potential yet to be discovered. The figure holds wands in her hands, clearly an echo of The Magician card, where the first sign of divine will appeared as the giving, masculine principle. Here the feminine principle, together with the masculine principle, gives birth to a complete world; hence the card's name comes naturally, as one can see the totality of this principle. The figure is dancing, another reminder of the divine dance of creation of Shakti and Shiva in Tantric cosmology. The woman is wrapped in a veil that clearly resembles the Hebrew letter Kaph, which in turn symbolizes the Wheel of Fortune card. Indeed, this is not the only motif that brings us back to that card. First of all, we see the four creatures in the corners of the card. Even a quick look lets us recognize that they also appear in the Wheel of Fortune card. But while on that card the creatures on the wheel go up and down, from joy to sorrow, from good to evil, in this card there is no more wheel, but rather a carousel that takes you to whatever part of the universe you want, in the final state of completion and bliss. These four creatures also symbolize the four directions, the four fixed signs of the Zodiac and the divine laws that stand at the corners of creation. Another, very similar explanation sees them as the four cherubim in the four domains: the bull for matter, the eagle for time, the lion for energy and the man for space. We can see one more link with the previous cards: the dancer has her legs crossed. At first glance this is identical to the position of The Hanged Man, but reversed: while The Hanged Man card was directed inwards, in introspection, The World is projected outwards, into the universe.

Upright

In the material world this card often manifests as a graduation or a promotion of some kind, advancement to a higher position or, in a more subtle way, an initiation into a deeper level of understanding and knowledge. There is always a feeling that a significant cycle in the querent's life is complete. One can literally feel wholeness and joy. It can be seen as a time of great achievement and the arrival of one's heart's desire.

Reversed

Possible impatience, delay, lack of fruition due to recklessness, and general stagnation.
