The Three of Pentacles tarot card

This is the card that embodies the spirit of cooperation, effort and inspiration at work. We see three figures on the card who are measuring something or perhaps discussing a joint venture. We may conclude that the figures on the card are artisans who are ready to put their experience, knowledge and energy into a project of great complexity. That project could be something that only a few can carry out. Obviously this card speaks of ability. Because it belongs to the Pentacles suit, it speaks less about natural talent and more about knowledge gained through hard effort and great discipline. Just beneath the roof we see a structure made up of three pentacles bearing the weight of the building, a symbol of the importance of cooperation as symbolised by the number three.

On the card

Inside a stone church or cathedral, a young craftsman stands on a wooden bench, working on the architecture with his tools. Below him stand two other figures: a monk in a dark robe and a person in a patterned cloak who holds a sheet of plans or drawings. All three seem to be in conversation, discussing the work.

Above them, carved into the stone arch, are three pentacles arranged in a triangle, set within the Gothic design of the building.

The craftsman is raised above the others while he works, which honours his skill. Yet he is not working alone: the monk represents the church or patron who commissions the work, and the figure with the plans the architect or designer. Each contributes something different.

The church setting gives the work a sense of dignity and lasting value, a building meant to stand for generations. The card speaks of teamwork, skilled craftsmanship and the recognition that comes when knowledge, planning and practical work come together. It shows how real achievement is often the result of different people combining their talents.

Upright

Teamwork, effort, success through ability, recognition.

Reversed

Delays, lack of skill, criticism, bitterness, materialism, problems with money.
