The Two of Pentacles tarot card

This card is all about balance. Just as the juggler on the card is balancing the coins, so we must balance the different parts of our lives and keep that balance throughout all the changes. This also means that we need to keep a balance between earnings and expenditure, between different projects and ideas, between our wishes and reality, while always being ready for change. The waves and the ships in the background add further accents to the motif of everlasting change and the inherent instability of our lives. We can also see a horizontal figure eight, the mathematical symbol of infinity, suggesting that change is eternal. The lesson is that amid constant change we must preserve the equilibrium of mind and reason.

On the card

A young man in a tall, unusual hat seems to dance as he juggles two pentacles, one in each hand. Around the two coins runs a green ribbon, looped into the shape of a figure eight lying on its side, the sign of infinity, joining them in an endless loop.

He stands on one leg, with the other slightly raised, as though he is moving and keeping his balance at the same time. His body is turned and his weight shifts lightly, which gives the image a playful, rhythmic feeling.

Behind him the sea rises in high waves, and two ships ride up and down over them. The water is far from calm, yet the ships stay afloat, just as the young man keeps both coins in the air.

The image is about handling many things at once, with skill and good humour. The infinity loop suggests that this balancing act never really ends; life constantly asks us to adjust and readjust. The waves remind us that circumstances are always shifting. The card speaks of flexibility, adaptability and managing resources, time and responsibilities without losing one's lightness.

Upright

Flexibility and adaptability, having fun without recklessness, journey, change for the better, taking control.

Reversed

Imbalance, chaos, inconsistency, bad luck.
