The Ten of Swords tarot card

Again, this is a card whose imagery leaves no doubt about its meaning. The man on the card is not stabbed once, he is stabbed ten times. Can we describe total defeat and loss any better? Black clouds hang over him, but on the horizon we see good omens: blue mountains and a clear, sunny sky. So maybe there is a glimpse of hope in this situation, but only after we reassess our behaviour, learn and move on. Here there is nothing more to fight for. Like all the other Tens across the suits, the Ten of Swords brings to the maximum what was indicated in the Ace of its suit. We said that the Ace of Swords contains a warning about misusing the power of the sword and about the consequences that follow. Well, this card is the consequence of misuse. The dark, cloudy sky above suggests that this punishment comes from above, probably when the person doesn't even see it coming, suddenly and without warning. Here we can see the connection with The Tower. Our ego in its arrogance assumes the role of supreme master that controls everything, while in reality it controls nothing, and from time to time this fact is shown to it very clearly and beyond any doubt. This card reflects this situation.

On the card

A man lies face down on the ground at the edge of a body of water, with ten long swords driven into his back from neck to waist. A red cloth is draped over the lower part of his body. The image is deliberately exaggerated: one sword would be enough, and ten make it clear that this is an ending beyond any doubt.

The upper part of the sky is completely black, heavy and final. Yet along the horizon the darkness breaks into a band of golden yellow light, as at dawn, above calm water and a line of distant blue hills. The water is still, with no storm, and the light is spreading. The worst has already happened, and something new is about to begin.

His right hand, resting on the ground, appears to form a gesture similar to the blessing gesture made by the Hierophant, a small detail that suggests acceptance and the possibility of spiritual meaning even in total defeat.

The card shows the lowest point of a cycle. Because there is nowhere further to fall, it also carries the quiet message that the only way from here is upward, into the light on the horizon.
