This card is the highest aspect of the feminine side of the earth element, signifying fertility and birth. As such, the Queen of Pentacles bears a clear resemblance to The Empress. She embodies the nurturing, sustaining and caring aspects of material wealth. She can manifest as a generous woman who is also an authority and acts as a motherly figure. While at first glance she is not as intuitive as the Queen of Cups, she also has this water quality to some extent. As an earth card she can be obsessed with security and material advancement; perhaps she plays the role of a businesswoman, or perhaps she holds a high position in politics or education. She has a strong sensual side but can be conservative at times. Like the other court cards of the earth element, she is very reliable, responsible and very proficient when it comes to financial affairs.
On the card
The Queen sits on a throne in the middle of a flourishing garden, holding a large pentacle in her lap with both hands. She looks down at it with a tender, attentive expression, as if caring for a child.
Above her, branches of red roses arch over the throne, and flowers and greenery fill the space around her. Her stone throne is carved with fruit, cherubs and the head of a goat, the animal of Capricorn, an earth sign. In the lower right corner of the card a rabbit sits in the grass, a traditional symbol of fertility and abundance. Behind her a landscape of trees and distant mountains stretches under a clear sky.
Everything around the Queen speaks of growth, fertility and a comfortable, well-tended life. Her garden is not wild; it is cultivated and cared for, and she is clearly at home in it.
The way she holds the pentacle is the heart of the card. Wealth and resources are not just possessed but nurtured and used to support life. The card describes a practical, warm and generous figure who creates security and comfort for others, combining good sense in material matters with a caring, motherly nature.
