The Nine of Cups tarot card

When this card appears in a spread, it usually indicates the fulfilment of wishes. The figure is obviously very happy with the situation, sitting in front of chalices that are presented more or less as his possessions. As a member of the Cups suit, the satisfaction is usually emotional or sexual, but this is also a very good card for money and, generally speaking, for all kinds of material possessions. This situation is not always permanent if there is no spiritual support in the spread.

On the card

A well-fed man sits on a wooden bench, his arms folded across his chest and his legs apart, wearing a red cap and a broad, satisfied smile. Behind him a long curved table, covered with a blue cloth, displays nine golden cups in a neat arc, like trophies on a shelf. Nothing else in the picture distracts from the man and his treasures.

This is the card often called the "wish card", and the picture shows why. The man has what he wanted, and he wants us to see it. His folded arms and comfortable seat speak of contentment, but also of a certain pride: he is guarding his good fortune as much as enjoying it. The cups are arranged for display, not in use, which raises a gentle question about whether fulfilment is something to be shown or something to be shared. Everything here points to pleasure, comfort and satisfaction in the present moment, the joy of seeing one's hopes come true.

Upright

Abundance and satisfaction, success, wishes fulfilled, victory over difficulties.

Reversed

Material losses, vanity, blaming others, indulgence.
